Good Series but either its not over or it had a terrible ending....maybe both
By Stu
I liked this series - its fast-paced and the plot is just complicated enough to keep me interested but not so much so that I feel like a dumb reader. I plowed through the first three books and had read that this was the "final" book (although the author admits in her comments that she thought it was going to be a trilogy but kept going so right there you know its up for grabs). (Spoilers here so fair warning) As you readers know this entire series was building to an Epic battle with prophecies and a book (that everyone abandons after destroying several cities for) - The mantre "four would fight and two would survive" is constant. Guess what? That doesn't happen. Instead a pretty lame battle occurs after several characters are already killed then someone dies and after hours of being dead they get to come back at the end after making yet another deal with the shades. Its not cool when an author sets up a specific set of rules throughout several books then throws them out the window. Plus I am a huge fan of the supernatural but the whole "coming back to life ending" seemed too hokey for even me. And its not the same cheesy cliffhanger as the end of book two (where Marcus says to Emma "I am your worst nightmare") but there is a puffy back and forth about how "things arent what they seem" and the characters left are uncertain they havent started a shadow apocolpyse - I am sure the next finale will explain that better. I had other problems with the characters here too - while Aiden remains a flat evildoer throughout the others seem to vacilate between good guy and bad guy and not in the character-evolving way. More like in order to bend the story someone who was struggling with the morality of killing thousands of innocent people suddenly doesn care that they killed lots of people. In my opinion the author tried (but failed) to make these characters true to their principals but changed them so much that I began to care less and less who actually won this Epic battle. For example - Raphael - he was supposed to be a love-struck element whose constant failures made him somewhat bitter and delusional but by the end of the third book he was just a flat (mostly evil) character and we forgot all about his undying love for Emmanuella. By the end of this book he is so one-dimensional and boring I was rooting for him to get off the pages. I did enjoy the touching nanny-on-fire scene and thought it was a clever twist to show us the "other" Emma. Overall it remains an an entertaining read but missed the mark to greatness. If you love supernatural thrillers do yourself a favor and try the Fever series by Karen Moning - she follows a similar genre (with propehcies and end of the world stuff) but her characters are much more clearly defined and remain true to the rules she establishes.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTC!!
By Debera
While each book built on the story and each was better than the last, I wondered how Grover Swank would resolve all the issues and still give us HEA! But boy did she come through. My heart raced as Will and Emma tried to navigate all the hills and valleys of the elements as each tries to get the upper hand. And who should appear just in the nick of time? That would give it away. You will be kept guessing but one thing you can count on is Will and Emma's love for each other, and Jake. Jake will suffer at his grandfather's hand. But he will get help from an unexpected source. I loved the connection between Will and Emma and rooted for them through it all. You will cry with them and rejoice in their triumphs. Grover Swank has created a unique world and memorable characters. I will miss them. But I know I will find others in Grover Swank's future books. She is an author whose books I will continue to read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. GET ALL OF THEM BECAUSE YOU WILL WANT TO KEEP READING TO THE END WITHOUT STOPPING.

Emotional Rollercoaster
By deeavila
You know when you cry a few chapters in it's going to be a great book. The ride Ms. Grover Swank took me on as we approach the epic ending had me laughing, crying and holding my breath.
The fourth and final(?) book in the series is everything I expected from Denise and her writing. The action was non-stop but never felt like I've been there with these characters before. The choices the three main characters Emma, Will and Jake have to go through are heartbreaking and brought me to tears several times. I couldn't see a way out of the situation little Jake was in. I hoped it would work out in the end and that was where the breath holding came in.
Denise Grover Swank could not have ended this epic series in a better way. She left me thinking there could be more in the future! Maybe, hopefully this isn't where we leave our friends.
In short I loved this series from the action scenes to the mild love scenes to love between a mother and child. It is definitely a series I will reread again and again.
