Good short history of Russia in central Asia

The second part of the book covers Russian Turkestan in the nineteenth century. This may be the best short introduction to Russian expansion in central Asia. The book by "An Indian Officer" covers the same area in more detail. There appears to be no modern study of this period. The first part of the book is a history of central Asia from earliest times by a Professor Ross. It is hard to follow without a map and is now surpassed by Grousset and others.

Very dry history book with no personal experiences...at least none that I could find. I quit reading after about 100 pages out of boredom.
