Really like this author's style; check this book out!

Book Info: Genre: Steampunk mystery, humorous/Wodehouse parody
Reading Level: all ages (if able to read it)
Recommended for: people who enjoy steampunk stories, fans of Wodehouse's Jeeves novels, who like to laugh

My Thoughts: This is the sequel to What Ho, Automaton! (review linked here where formatting allowed), and a parody of the Wodehouse Jeeves books, set in a steampunk version of Victorian England (right after the turn of the 20th century; they are set in 1903).

Again, this was a very funny novella. It was a fast read, and like the first, full of all kinds of wonderful nonsense. The first book featured mostly automata, and only a few Prometheans (creatures sewn together of various parts and reanimated a la Frankenstein); in this book we mostly see Prometheans, with Reeves being the only automaton featured. I'm not certain if there will be any more of these, but if there are I'll be sure to search them out. Dolley has a dry absurdist sense of humor I find very appealing, and I will most likely be picking up more of his books if I am able. I have two more of his books available to me right now, which I plan to read over the weekend, so watch for those reviews coming up.

Love everything by Chris Dolley

If you like Jeeves and Wooster, either from the P.G. Wodehouse novel from the 30's, or from the British TV shows starring Hugh Laurie and ...dang, I just forgot his name, but if you've seen even one of them you'll know what I'm referring to....I don't see how you wouldn't enjoy this novel. Funny, clever, well-written, and very enjoyable to read. I've read everything (on Amazon at least) that Chris Dolley has published and I'm impressed with how different (in style and substance) each book is, and how very readable they are. Enjoy!

A Steam Punk Homage to Wodehouse

In this steam punk homage to PG Wodehouse (with a nod to Sherlock Holmes and a slight royal wave to Christie), it is 1903 and reanimating dead relatives has become something of a trend in England. Reginald Worcester, gentleman detective, and his steam operated automaton valet, Reeves have been hired to find Guy Fawkes who was reanimated by a relative to prove his innocence. Unfortunately, Guy has gone walk-about and may be planning to finish what he started in the 17th c., blow up Parliament while the Queen is visiting.

As you might guess from the title, Reggiecide is a humourous take on the steam punk genre which has been known to take itself way too seriously. This short novella is full of puns and corny jokes some of them so old, they were probably already past their tell-by date in 1903 and yet, somehow, at least for me, it worked. No, this isn't great literature but it is damnably funny. It is also short enough to absorb in an hour or two when the holiday spirit is starting to get you down and you need an antidote to annoying relatives who just decide to drop in unannounced for Thanksgiving or Christmas or even that most British of holidays, Guy Fawkes Day.

Why should you read this book?

Why should you read this book? Yes, it is a classic. Yes, it documents the wonderful, adventurous time of the clipper ship. But that's not why you should read it.

Richard Henry Dana must have been a most extraordinary man. While attending Harvard as a young man, his eyesight became weak and his health declined. He decided that the austere prescription of salt air and plain hard work would be the cure. Not many would give up comfort and privilege, but for two years, Dana served as a common sailor, given no special treatment as the gentleman he was, and lived in the forecastle of the Alert, eating the mess of salt beef and common hardtack, risking his life and serving under a captain crueler than most.

Dana was able to write in such a way as to re-create the life on board a sailing ship, down to the smallest details and that's what makes this book so real and touching. You can feel the cold of Tierra del Fuego, taste the salt beef, and feel the wind and damp. What's more amazing is that Dana's carefully-kept journal was lost along with his other mementos of his voyage when he landed back on shore in Boston, due to some tragic carelessness of someone he entrusted with his chest of belongings. Yet he was able to recreate his voyage in loving detail and in some very excellent writing.

Dana's later life as a lawyer was far from happy, though he made some critical contributions to maritime law. He died a poor and disappointed man, but left us the richer with his book. I just re-read it again for the tenth time, and it is fresher than ever. Read it along side of Moby Dick. It's American literature and American history and culture at its very best.

Fantastic, You Must Read This!

I know many people cringe at the thought of reading a narrative that seems to greatly resemble Moby Dick, but I tell you this better than Moby Dick and easy makes it into my top ten books I have ever read! Occassionally the text bogs down in obscure sailing terms, but that is an exception and not a rule, otherwise, it is sheer poetry and lights the fire of wonder of exploration, and makes a sea voyage from almost 200 years ago spring to life. I give you my favorite short little passage, which explains it so much better.
"So quiet too, was the sea, and so steady the breeze, that if the sails had been sculptured marble they could not have been more motionless. Not a ripple upon the surface of the canvas; not even a quivering of the extreme edges of the sail, so perfectly were they distended by the breeze. I was so lost in the sight that I forgot the presence of the man who came out with me, until he said, 'How quietly they do their work!'"
Dana so perfectly described sea life you will be a part of the crew, you will feel his fear, his wonder, his joy and his awe.
You will not regret reading this, philosophy disguised as a travelogue, a must-read!

Wish I had been there too !

This is a great story for nautical buffs, history buffs and adventure fans. This young man takes passage to sail around the horn to go to California in it's days of infancy as a traders destination.
I found the personal stories , the information of the early days at the ports of call and the historical description to be exciting and deep in it's descriptive painting of a life long gone but important to the future of the state.
I recommend this book.

In recent years there have been several studies of the post-Franco transition. Payne, a veteran historian of modern Spain, judges the time to be ripe for a fresh overview of the Franco regime itself. He focuses on the political history of the Franco years, with lesser attention to economic and other developments. Payne struggles to give the Franco of the Civil War every possible credit, assuming Republican bias on the part of the reader. He is less gentle with the regime in reporting on the repression and World War II periods. Splendid, objective and well documented

[...]. However, since this is a book for the international market, I think that a praise in Amazon, made by an interested observer and born in Spain, should be more valuable.

Anyone interested in the recent history of Spain can reach a conclusion: Almost all the specialists lie.

There are different ways to lie:

One of them is having a previous political position and accepting, omitting or downplaying facts according to this position. Many specialists as Tuñón de Lara, Paul Preston, Ricardo de la Cierva, Pio Moa and some others could be under this chapter. Anyone familiar with the works of these writers can observe that the tendencies in some of them are opposite but they act in the same way. They have two different set of rules and the acceptability is defined depending on who performs the action to be analyzed.

Another way to lie can be involuntary: When someone writes about the own experience and, because of that, has a limited view of the reality, the final picture has only one side. That could be the case of Burnett Bolloten, Felix Schlayer, George Orwell and many others that write about their personal experience living in one side during the war. They cannot really know if similar actions happen in the other side and, thus, this is not commented and their picture of the situation could be strongly deviated.

The third one is worse since the writes lies in the name of the objectivity. The writer tries to keep a neutral position having in every single situation the same distance from both sides and, thus, forgetting who is in every case the killer and who is the victim.

Payne is different...and better. He tries to be objective but, in doing so, he does not confuse objectivity with equidistance. He tries to attach the objectivity to the facts and that's why he can critizice one side and, at a different moment, can criticize the other side.

Perhaps, Payne could be criticized about the name of the book. He starts before 1936. The book is not a biography of Franco but speaks even about his childhood. Once Franco starts to be a political and military leader, Payne gets more centered at his political activity.

Franco, as described by Payne, is not the kind of moron and grey character that many specialists have been drawing for years. Actually, he is presented as a very interesting man, able to outsmart his many opponents even when his appearance was far from attractive.

However, the book is not a favorable praise of Franco. Payne tries to explain what happened and why and, to understand that, a half-stupid Franco should leave many issues unexplained.

During the Civil War, both sides were critiziced from abroad due to the huge number of assassinations. The dynamics of this moment or what were the forces during the II World War and the resulting position for Franco and for Spain cannot be understood without studying the character, changes and actions of the main actor.

I would like to finish with a personal remark: After reading many books from very different writers about Spain during the XX century, I can say that this book has been clarifying for me in some previously unexplained issues.

Excellent Scholarship

This is a very thorough, carefully referenced, and clearly written narrative and analysis of Franco's tenure as the autocrat of Spain. Payne begins with a concise introduction to the relevant background of Spanish politics and the origins of the Civil War, providing a nice overview of the major ideological currents and which of these currents is likely to have had the greatest influence on Franco. Payne's discussion of the origin of the Civil War is probably the most controversial part of the book. His position, laid out extensively in a prior book is that the actions of the Spanish Leftist and Radical parties were the primary contributors to the demise of the Second Republic. Payne's points are well taken but other scholars have tended to emphasize the role of the right in destabilizing the Second Republic. Payne then provides a nice overview of the Civil War, concentrating on the politics of the Nationalist side, the development of Nationalist ideology, and Franco's role as the eventual leader of the Nationalist movement. The narrative of Franco's participation in and leadership of the Nationalist cause shows the qualities that characterize his whole career as the Dictator of Spain. Cautious, thorough, tenacious once committed but politically flexible, and a very good judge of subordinates. The Nationalist triumph in the Civil War derived to a large extent from Franco's military professionalism. While certainly not an outstanding commander, his competence and the unity command inherent in having a single leader gave the Nationalists a substantial advantage over the Republicans. Payne divides the subsequent regime into 3 phases. The initial consolidation of power and semi-fascist phase, a period of authoritarian nationalism with a strong emphasis on Catholic traditionalism, and the final relative reformist phase from about 1960 to Franco's death. Each of these phases is discussed well with a good balance of narration and analysis of the underlying currents. Payne does a particularly nice job of tracing the tortuous history of internal regime politics and the impact of external events on the regime. Franco emerges as an unusually capable politician who was able to balance competing groups within his regime and willing to make key compromises when necessary. At the end of the 1950s, it became clear that the regime's economic policies were total failures. Franco had the flexibility to accede to marked changes in policy that played a major role in Spain's subsequent remarkable economic development. Payne is thorough, dispassionate, and makes judgements free of rightist or leftist cliches.

Read the beginning and the end, but skip the phrases!

Perfect Phrases for Documenting Employee Performance Problems provide terminology and limited guidance for writing employee performance evaluations.

Perfect Phrases for Documenting Employee Performance Problems provides negative examples of terminology used to document and correct inadequate performance. While this book provides sound guidance on delivering evaluations, many of the proposed "perfect" phrases fail to indicate performance problems in an appropriate or constructive manner. The majority of the proposed phrases defy legal expectations, best practices, and even the advice provided in the book itself. Although it suggests providing concrete, specific examples of an actual behavior requiring correction, with clear steps to achieve improvement, phrases are frequently inappropriate for inclusion in a performance evaluation. For example, "Doesn't seem to really like people," "Evidently has low self-esteem," and "Will not admit to being depressed often" are of questionable suitability for a performance evaluation and appear to be almost completely subjective. In many instances, these unquantifiable phrases border on obnoxious and condescending, as indicated by "Does not know how to effectively brain storm, instead `brain drizzles'" and "Needs to take a class on delegating." Similarly, phrases often employ jargon and complex concepts that confuse the issue, such as, "Needs to read Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ and Working with Emotional Intelligence, both authored by Daniel Goleman" and "Is a Theory X worker." Finally, some leave no opportunity for improvement, are ambiguous, contradictory, and frequently appear wholly irrelevant, including "Has mismatched pieces of clothing," "Doesn't care that GED is the only educational credential he or she has," and "Cannot accept colors, fashions, trends, or styles outside the norm." While there are certainly a handful of applicable phrases, these "perfect" phrases are far from it and should be considered carefully before use.

Perfect Phrases fails to provide meaningful suggestions, and its use will probably result in headaches and lawsuits. Skip Perfect Phrases, and instead consider Effective Phrases for Performance Appraisals, and select a performance review book to supplement the vocabulary with appropriate evaluation strategies.

These phrases could get you in big trouble!

I can only assume that the other reviewers have not cleared these phrases with any HR department--or that they are friends of the author. The classic text by James Neal IS useful, so if you are looking for phrases, consider it. I will use this one as a source for examples of dangerous appraisal comments.

Let's say you receive your performance appraisal--the one on which your pay is based. You aren't getting a raise this year and you wonder why. How would you like to see some of Ms. Bruce's phrases on your appraisal? "Is clumsy." "Has an angry personality." "Celebrates seldom." "Has skewed logic." "Is a turn-off to fellow employees." "Does not appear to have adequate support system at home." "Has come to work bruised or badly shaken emotionally." Does not know how to brainstorm, in fact brain drizzles."

I sincerely thought this was meant to be a joke book when I first read it. Many of the opinions (compared to behavioral observations) could never be proven--and even if they could, would not be valid for a performance appraisal. Furthermore, consider how unprofessional a supervisor or manager would sound using terminology like this in something that might end up in court or an employment hearing some day: "Gets way too emotional." "Puts the kibosh on positive attitudes." "Acts very suspicious of everyone, almost paranoid." "Is sometimes difficult to understand because of heavy accent or language barriers." "Would not be found guilty of integrity if it were a crime." And those are supposed to be, as the cover says, ready-to-use phrases for addressing all performance issues?

Ms. Bruce is knowledgable and capable, so I am surprised at this material. If you purchase it, do not assume all or even most of the phrases will do anything more than result in a negative evaluation for YOU. You might end up with an appraisal that says, "Is more comfortable in the victim role," "Is slow moving," "Does not read newspapers or magazines," or even, "does not appear underchallenged."
