Get it for Zorro Alone

I've become very interested in those classic works that people see, but seldom read. Zorro is near the top of this list, and here is an early publication by Mr. McCulley including that immortal tale under its first, rather ill-chosen name (The Curse of Capistrano). Zorro does not disappoint- the prose is lively and fun, a real page-turner that everyone can enjoy. You can easily see the themes of honor, adventure and true love's dilemma here, which carried over into many movie and TV versions (even Hollywood doesn't screw it up all the time!). In this original, you clearly see the sense of Spanish honor and the delicious secret identity of the languid and useless Don Diego Vega. McCulley does not provide a lot of scene setting or description, but his dialogue crackles and you can hear the boot-heels clicking, the scrape of the sword leaping from the sheath.
Younger readers should be warned that the treatment of Indians and even Spanish peasants is quite stereotypical here, but nothing offensive to my reading. The female lead is active and intelligent, rising to the level of a heroine before the end, though of course the main interest lies with Zorro. He does make his famous mark once, in flesh, but the villain richly deserves the rather gruesome punishment.
Don't bother too much with the "Six Stories" that come with this volume- though he has some ingenious plot ideas, Mr. McCulley did not attack these with the same verve and energy; in some places the dialogue is plainly painful, in others the plot quite slow. The volume also suffers from the usual difficulties that I've seen in other low-cost transcriptions- missing or repeated words, in one case about a half-page of conversation simply dropped out of sight! Worse yet, it doesn't affect the story that much!
But just for the title-tale, this is a great addition to your library and I would warmly recommend it. You'll see echoes of Guy Williams, or Antonio Banderas, faithfully prefigured in the original tale.
