Spiritually Entertaining
By John E. Nevola
This is not the type of young adult book I would ordinarily read but I opted to read it because my pre-teen granddaughter was reading it. I thought it would be cool to be able to discuss the book with her.
To my surprise, I found myself engaged and absorbed in the story and enjoying it more than I expected. Set during the Civil War, the book tells the story of two women from different backgrounds and how they came together as nurses treating the combat wounded of the war.
The author weaves this tale within the historical background of various battles of the Civil War. She inserts just enough spirituality to motivate the main female characters to overcome issues and challenges posed by the war and by their gender.
The female protagonists were both credible and interesting while their male counterparts were predictable and somewhat shallow. The author pointedly portrayed the social standards of the time period and what men expected of the women in their lives. The conflicts occur when the women push back on performing in the roles society expects of them.
The book encompasses interesting history, some romance, a bit of action, some religious food for thought and the drama created when strong women refuse to accept their fate as decided by others.
All in all, there was plenty of good material for my granddaughter and me to chat about.

A Remarkable Novel
By Amazon Customer
Fire by Night is the second of Lynn Austin's "Refiner's Fire" trilogy. This was definitely my favorite of the three books. It tells in parallel the story of two women during the Civil War.
Julie Hoffman is a very well-to-do, spoiled and shallow Northern girl who is enamored of the Rev. Nathaniel Greene. She overhears him telling someone that she has none of the qualities he would want in a wife. He is very put off by her selfish and self-absorbed nature. Julie is devastated by what she hears him saying about her. She decides to prove him wrong and win his heart. She volunteers to work as a nurse caring for the wounded soldiers under the ascerbic Dr. James McGrath, who rides her mercilessly trying to get her to give up and go home. As Julie experiences the horror of the war and the suffering of the wounded men, a change starts taking place in her.
Phoebe Bigelow is a tall, husky, and very poor tomboy who wishes she were a man. Her three brothers go off to war and leave her alone to live with the Haggerty family taking care of their children. Phoebe can't stand the thought of this, and decides to disquise herself as a boy and join the Union Army under the name Ike Bigelow. She's never had a real friend, but she starts to learn what friendship is from her tent-mate Ted. She starts to realize that her feelings for Ted are growing into something more than friendship.
In the second half of the book, the two story lines come together. The plot is superb throughout, but the real strength of the book is its strong characterization. You will care about the people and become totally engrossed in this page-turner.
You should read Book 1, Candle in the Darkness, first, for the continuity. The first book is excellent too--it won a Christy Award--but for me Book 2 was the best. After you finish Fire by Night, you'll be eager to get started on the third book, A Light to my Path. The whole series is wonderful. This author is a great find for me; I'll be reading more of her books!
