one of the best westerns I have read!

I am 62 years old and have been reading western novels since I was 13. I didn't think I would ever read a western as great as "Lonesome Dove". I was wrong, I can't wait to read more by Lauran Paine. He blows Louie Lamour out of his saddle as writer!

The movie is better

This is an okay read. But it is also one of those rare books which is not as good as the movie based on it. There are differences in the plot between book and movie which make the movie a more interesting and exciting story; and the characters (which usually are better developed in a book than in a movie) are much more "real" in the movie than in the book. If you've not seen the movie, by all means take a look at the book; but if you have seen the movie, it's my guess you'll be vaguely disappointed in the book.

A good Western read.

I loved the movie - yet only liked the book. One of the few times in my life where I can say the movie was better than the book - although the book was probably more true to life. I saw the movie first so I believe I had some predetermined ideas about how the book should have unfolded. I is likely, had I read the book first rather than seen the movie, I would have an opposite opinion. I would recommend this book to anyone interested.
